AUSTRIA. DECR UOC staff member takes part in a conference in Vienna

On March 14-16, 2018, the conference “Europe: Where? Challenges for Church and Society” was held in Vienna (Austria). Attending the conference at the invitation of organisers and with the blessing of the Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (DECR UOC) His Eminence Metropolitan Mytrofan of Luhansk and Alchevsk, was DECR UOC staff member Prof. Dr. S. M. Bortnyk.

The conference was organised by the German Charity Foundation “Renovabis”, the Austrian Organisation “Pro Oriente”, the Swiss “Ecumenical Forum on Faith, Religion and Society in the East and West” and the Vienna Diplomatic Academy (Diplomatische Akademie Wien). In total more than 100 participants from 18 European countries took part in the event. One of the issues for consideration was the awareness of crisis phenomena in political and church perspectives. Particular attention was paid to the issues of the spread of populism and nationalism in different countries on the European continent.

During the panel discussions, cases from twelve specific Eastern European countries were considered, including Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Andriy Vaskovych, President of “Caritas Ukraine” presented the situation in Ukraine. Dr. S. M Bortnyk took an active part in discussing these problems and establishing contacts for further cooperation.
