UOC Administrator meets with representatives of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine

On March 2, 2018. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) Administrator His Eminence Metropolitan Antoniy of Boryspil and Brovary met with the Head of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Ms. Fiona Fraser. Also representing the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at the meeting were: The Head of the UOC Representation to International European Organisations (UOC IEO) His Grace Bishop Victor (Kotsaba) of Baryshivka, Deputy Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations (UOC DECR) Archpriest Mykolay Danylevych and  DECR staff member Dr. S. M. Bortnyk.

Metropolitan Antoniy recounted the role of The Church in the release of prisoners, and also informed the guests about further actions planned by The Church in this sphere, where good news is expected in the near future. Also discussed were the violations of the rights of Ukrainian Orthodox Church faithful that have taken place in recent times, in particular from the beginning of 2018. His Eminence expressed concern about attacks and systematic Information Warfare waged against the UOC. Also, the Church is very concerned about the growth of radical and nationalist forces and similar trends in society.

In turn, Ms. Fraser acknowledged the role of The Church in the process of releasing persons detained in connection with the conflict. Ms. Fraser also noted that the UN Mission, headed by her, will continue to monitor the observance of human rights in Ukraine, including Freedom of Religion. The Mission calls on Law Enforcement Agencies to effectively investigate acts of violence committed by radical groups and bring perpetrators to justice and restore due process for victims.

The parties discussed a number of other issues of mutual interest.

Towards the conclusion of the meeting, Vladyka Antoniy stated: “We are all Christians, and hence optimists, and therefore believe that we will find a way out of the difficult situation in which our Fatherland finds itself in today.
