PORTUGAL. Choral ensemble from Kyiv present a Christmas carol concert at the Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Braga

From January 12 to January 16, 2018, with the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv and All Ukraine, a choral quintet, whose members included UOC Department for External Church Relations co-worker V. V. Gorzov, Kyiv Theological Academy (KDA) student Ivan Shcherban and KDA graduates: Fr. Serhiy Bohachenko, Oleksandr Vihor and Michailo Boroday – visited Portugal, where the choristers presented two Christmas concerts in the cities of Braga and Porto, and also sang at the festive Divine services commemorating The Circumcision of Christ and Saint Basil the Great at the Ukrainian Orthodox parish of Sts. Faith, Hope and Charity with their mother Sophia in the city of Braga, where pastoral care is provided by Parish priest Tarasiy Ladecky.

The Christmas concert in Braga was held on January 14 after the Divine Liturgy. The ensemble performed more than 30 Ukrainian Christmas carols and, at the end of the concert, delighted the audience with several Ukrainian folk songs. After the performance of the quintet, Father Tarasiy greeted everyone with the Feast and thanked the guests from Ukraine for the opportunity provided to once again feel the joy of Christmas and be immersed in childhood memories whilst listening to the carols. Among the audience were many Ukrainians living in Portugal, as well as the Portuguese themselves.

On the same day, the Choristers visited the Cathedral of the Blessed Mary in the Archdiocese of Braga, where they performed several Ukrainian Christmas carols and also greeted parishioners of the cathedral with the Nativity of Christ.

On January 15, another Christmas concert took place in the city of Porto, after which parish priest Fr. Oleksandr Piskunov, greeted everyone with the Feasts and expressed his sincere gratitude to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy and the organisers of the event for the opportunity to be able to connect in festal song. Father Oleksandr particularly noted that the city of Porto has previously never heard such a diversity of Ukrainian Christmas carols.
