SWEDEN. UOC Metropolitan establishes new Orthodox parish in the city of Boliden

With the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv and All Ukraine, in agreement with the Administration for Institutions Abroad of the Russian Orthodox Church, on November 26, 2017, Metropolitan Luka of Zaporizhzhya and Melitopol consecrated the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the Swedish city of Boliden, Västerbotten County in the north of the country. After the Rite of Consecration of the church, a solemn Divine Liturgy was led by Metropolitan Luka and concelebrated by the UOC Deputy Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations Archpriest Mykolay Danylevych and clergy representing the UOC Zaporizhzhya eparchy. The initiative to establish the parish was by our compatriots themselves – who originally hail from Zaporizhzhya oblast but now reside in this region of Sweden.

Attending the festive service were orthodox Christians from the nearby towns of Luleå , Skellefteå as well as other towns. Attending the church service were Ukrainians, Russians, and even Orthodox Swedes who all worshipped together. During the Divine service a special prayer for peace in Ukraine was said. Following the Divine Liturgy, Vladyka Luka delivered a sermon on the theme of Gospel reading. He congratulated the parishioners with the establishment of their new parish, which now has its own traditional church. The Vladyka stressed that “this church is open to everyone, not only to Ukrainians or Russians, but to all who love God, and to all who are faithful to God”.

For her good works connected with the establishment of the parish, Metropolitan Luka awarded the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Order of the Venerable Anastasia of Kyiv to parishioner Victoria Vikström, whose efforts included the acquisition and the provision of fitting out works for the church. His Eminence also thanked the representatives of the clergy from his eparchy, the Dean of Melitopol Archpriest Maxim Smirnov and deacon Oleksandr Bednov with the assistance and active participation in the organisation of the parish. Metropolitan Luka also gave an interview to local TV and spoke to mass media representatives.

The UOC DECR continues to work on the creation of Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in locations which are relatively densely populated by our compatriots in various countries of the world.
