SWITZERLAND. UOC DECR representatives participate in conference whose theme was Synodality and its Implementation

From November 16-18, 2017, at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), a conference with the theme “Synodality and its Implementation – a Theological Topos for the Churches in East and West” was held. At the invitation of the organisers and with the blessing of the Administrator of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) His Eminence Metropolitan Antoniy of Boryspil and Brovary, the conference was attended by UOC Department for External Church Relations staff-members Professor Dr. S. M. Bortnyk and V. V. Gorzov.

The conference attracted a number of representatives from the Catholic Church as well as representatives from all of the Local Orthodox Churches of the world. The first speaker, who set the tone of the conference, was the representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate His Eminence Archbishop Job (Getcha) of Telmessos. His report was called “Synodality – Results and Challenges of the Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church”. In particular, he spoke about the development of the idea of a parity of “primacy and unity” within the framework of the official dialogue between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches, and which has been studied within this framework since 2006.

During the course of the conference, representatives from all of the Local Orthodox Churches discussed the details of the spiritually unified life in their Churches. The situation in the Russian Orthodox Church was addressed by His Grace Bishop Irinei Steenberg. UOC Representative Prof. Dr. S. M. Bortnyk concentrated on the peculiarities of the embodiment of sobornost or unity in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Belarusian Exarchate.

The conference has become an opportunity for communication between hierarchs and prominent theologians, and it has in itself become a bridge for building friendly relationships between the participants of the event.
