Representatives of KDA Administration acquainted with system of Theological education in Germany

From October 29 to November 4, 2017, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antoniy of Boryspil and Brovary, the Rector of the Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary (KDAiS), a delegation of KDAiS lecturers took part in a fact-finding tour of the Theological centres of Germany. Throughout the week, there were meetings with representatives from the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant faculties of Münster, Heidelberg, Munich and Eichstätt.

The group included Pro-Rector for Teaching-Methodological work Professor Archimandrite Silvester (Stoichev), Pro-Rector for Scientific and Theological Work Professor V. V. Bureha, and KDAiS research fellow Dr. Ye. V. Komarov. Facilitating with the organisation of the trip and accompanying the group was KDAiS Associate Professor and an employee of the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Dr. S. M. Bortnyk.

Between October 29-30, the group held a series of meetings in Münster. Of particular mention, were the meetings with Professor Dr. Thomas Bremer (Ecumenics, Eastern Church Studies and Peace Research), Professor Clemens Leonard, a liturgical specialist who is currently a Dean of the Catholic faculty in Münster, and Professor Assaad Elias Kattan (Chair of Orthodox Church Theology of the Centre for Religious Studies in Münster).

The group also met with Dr. Johannes Oeldemann (Director of the Johann-Adam Möhler Institute for Interconfessional Studies in Paderborn) and Professor Hans-Peter Grosshans, a specialist in the Philosophy of Religion and Relations with the Orthodox Churches.

Between October 31 and November 1, the group visited Heidelberg, where they became acquainted with the liturgical tradition of the Evangelical Church and the system of training local clerics. The group met with Professor Michael Welker, Executive Director of the Research Centre for International and Interdisciplinary Theology (FIIT).

On November 2-3, the group held a series of meetings in Munich. In particular, they met with the Dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology Professor Dr. Andreas Wollbold and the Dean of the Faculty of Evangelical Theology, Professor Albrecht. Of special interest were the meetings with the Orthodox representatives in Munich – Professor Athanasios Vletsis, and a group of his colleagues and students at the Institute for the Study of Orthodox Theology. Significant events were meetings with Head of the Department of Inter-Church communication at the Archbishopric Ordinariate Dr. Florian Schuppe and the Managing Director of the Inter-Christian Council of Bavaria (ACK-Bayern) Georgios Vlantis.

The trip ended with a visit to the Collegium Orientale in Eichstätt which is located not far from Munich. As in most of the other places visited, the delegation members were able to get acquainted with the conditions of stay and residence of the theology students.

The trip was carried out thanks to the cooperation and promotion of the Renovabis charity fund of German Catholics and the Ukrainian charity foundation “Academic Initiative”.
