SWITZERLAND. UOC DECR staff member participates in Academic meeting in Fribourg

19–21 June, 2017. The Conference “Pneumatology and Interconfessional Relations” was held at Fribourg University’s (Switzerland) Study Centre for Faith and Society (Studienzentrum Für Glaube und Gesellschaft). Taking part in the event at the invitation of  Conference organisers was Dr. Serhiy M. Bortnyk, staff member at the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (DECR UOC).

Speaking at the Conference were outstanding representatives from the Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican and Protestant communities. Special mention goes to: Prof. Dr. Nicholas Thomas Wright who gave a talk on “The Powerful Breath of the Holy Spirit”, and the current head of the Anglican Community The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Justin Welby presented his report “The Move of the Spirit – A global perspective”, and Cardinal and Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Schönborn Op discussed “The Spirit moves – A review of Spiritual Movements”.

The Orthodox position was represented by His Eminence Metropolitan Serafim Joantă of Germany, Central and Northern Europe from the Romanian Orthodox Church, who spoke on the topic “The Holy Spirit as the goal of spiritual life – the Orthodox perspective” and also by certain other Orthodox participants from Eastern Europe.

Dr. Serhiy M. Bortnyk took part in a lively discussion about the role of pneumatology in the life of the Church, stressing the importance of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in Orthodox theology.
